Visiting Huai Tueng Thao Sculpture Park Sculpture Park in Chiang Mai: A Unique Photo Spot & Family Day Out

If you're looking for something totally unique, off the beaten path, and perfect for your camera roll—Huai Tueng Thao Sculpture Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand is a must-see. Nestled beside the Huay Tung Tao Reservoir, this open-air art park is bursting with massive hay sculptures and chilled countryside vibes.

Getting there and entry information

Huay Tung Tao Sculpture Park is located just outside of Chiang Mai (around 15km), inside the scenic Huay Tung Tao Reservoir. It’s super easy to get to—whether you rent a scooter or car, the ride is short and smooth. In regards to taxi’s or rides, we are not sure on how easy it is to get a ride when leaving the reservoir.

Best of all? No reservation is needed and entry into the reservoir is quick and easy. We paid 50 baht per person entry fee.

When we visited, there was no wait time for photos and barely any other tourists. It honestly felt like a hidden gem.

What to expect at Huay Tung Thao Sculpture Park

The park features massive, eye-catching sculptures made from steel structures wrapped in hay. Think gorillas, elephants, buffalos, and other animal creations—each one unique and surprisingly detailed.

It’s an absolutely huge open area, with a real farm feel. Right beside the sculptures, you’ll see buffalos and sheep grazing freely—it adds such a natural, grounded vibe to the experience.

It’s also a great spot for families and kids, with engaging and kid-friendly sculptures that spark curiosity and creativity. The playful atmosphere and open space make it a hit for all ages.

Photo tips & best time to visit

There’s no shade near the sculptures, so keep that in mind! We spent about 30 minutes taking photos, and even though it was hot, it was totally worth it. Bring a hat, water, and sunscreen—or better yet, visit just before sunset when the golden light hits the sculptures beautifully and the sun begins to set behind the mountains. We visited midweek in January.

This time of day is truly magical and ideal for photos, especially if you want that golden-hour glow without a crowd.

Food, drinks & rest stops

Near the park, you’ll find a small shop where you can grab cold drinks, ice cream, or just take a break from the heat. It's nothing fancy, but a perfect little pit stop for cooling off and recharging before or after exploring.

Climbing the sculptures?

Some of the hay-covered animal sculptures—like the gorillas—are climbable, and it’s super tempting to get that elevated photo shot! Just be cautious of sharp metal edges hidden under the hay. We climbed a couple carefully, but always use your best judgment.

Why we loved it?

Honestly, this place is such a cool and creative concept. The peaceful surroundings, unique sculptures, and almost tourist-free vibe made it one of our favourite low-key spots in Chiang Mai. It’s a great place to slow down, take some photos, enjoy the green space, and just have fun.

You could easily make a half-day trip out of it, especially if you’re looking for something different from temples and markets. Bring snacks, take your time, and enjoy a more relaxed side of Chiang Mai.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re a couple chasing unique photo ops or a family looking for something outdoorsy and fun, Huai Tueng Thao Sculpture Park Sculpture Park is 100% worth a visit. It’s quirky, peaceful, and packed with charm—plus, who doesn’t want to see a giant hay gorilla in the wild?
